Homosocial and Homosexual Desires in My Fair Lady Essay Example for Free

Homosocial and Homosexual Desires in My Fair Lady Essay Today, relationships are hard to define. With the newfound acceptance of homosexuality, the border between male homosocial relations and homosexual relations has become fuzzy. The distinction between male homosocial and homosexual desires are what I will be exploring in My Fair Lady. In the classic movie My Fair Lady the relationship between Professor Higgins and Colonel Pickering displays both homosocial and homosexual characteristics, and models the triangular desire defined by Eve Sedgwick. Higgins invites Colonel Pickering to his house and then the next morning invites Eliza to his house. This action of inviting Eliza to stay over after inviting Pickering can be explained as having both homosocial and homosexual characteristics. The homosocial interpretation of this situation is Higgins feels a strong friendship towards Colonel Pickering. Rather than having him pay for a hotel while visiting London, he invites him to stay at his home because it is the friendly thing to do. Higgins then sees it might be awkward for two confirmed bachelors to be living together, however temporary it may be. Uncomfortable with implications some people may draw, he invites Eliza to stay in order to maintain his masculinity and not have people speculating about his homosexuality. When arguing his actions as homosexual, his invitation to Pickering is not motivated by friendship but by his desires to have sexual relations with Pickering. Having Pickering live with him would be the easiest way to accomplish a discrete relationship. Creating a faà §ade, Higgins invites Eliza so society will not discover his true intentions. After bringing Eliza into the house and suffering through a few problems Higgins sings Im an Ordinary Man to Pickering. Listing some negative qualities of women in his song displays both homosocial and homosexual characteristics. A homosocial standpoint sees this as Higgins, like many men do, telling his buddy about all the drama a woman brings into his life when having a relationship with a woman. Just like women get together with their girlfriends and gossip about the silly things men do, Higgins and Pickering are doing the same thing. The two laugh about the silly behavior of women and can relate to one another because both have had similar experiences, bonding in a strictly same-sex, non-sexual manner. Higgins is also promoting  his own masculinity by noting the flaws in a womans character, expressing his views on why males are more superior then females. However, at the closing of the song, Higgins declares, I shall never let a woman in my life, implying his homosexuality. Rather than listing the faults of women jokingly, his song can be interpreted as a justification for his choice of a homosexual lifestyle. He even states, Why Cant a Woman Be More like a Man, implying women should lose all their female characteristics and become men, thus, making them appealing to him.Again, Higgins is declaring man the superior race and because men are superior, he has a sexual attraction for them which he may not share for women. Higgins focuses so much attention on Eliza while refining her and this attention can be viewed as his romantic feelings for Eliza, meaning his relationship with Pickering is strictly homosocial, or that his feelings for Eliza are a displacement of his homosexual feelings for Pickering. The homosocial viewpoint sees Higgins, transforming Eliza from a measly flower girl into a beautiful lady, his ideal woman. He felt an attraction to Eliza when he found her in the gutter but due to social restraints, he knew it was not socially acceptable for him to date a woman of her class. After her transformation, he is now free to love her. Ironically, the women he creates is goddess-like, statuesque, untouchable to the common manHiggins and Pickering strike a bet with one another on whether or not Higgins can pass Eliza off as a duchess. Higgins will have to teach Eliza proper English, dress her in high fashion, and train her in the appropriate manners of society. In my experience, not many straight men find giving a woman make-over to be very fun which is why Higgins actions can be viewed to have homosocial and homosexual motivations. A homosocial attitude on the situation would explain this as two men competing in a bet, meaning Higgins is only participating in activities categorized with the homosexual stereotype to win. The two are able to bond over the experience and in the process; Higgins can shape Eliza into the kind of woman he desires. Instead of directing his motivations for playing real-life Barbie on the premise he is only doing this to win a bet, the homosexual interpretation would focus on the primary action; taking a girl from drab to fabhomo. Lets face it, while this is a huge generalization, most men in Western culture dont care  about fashion, let alone womens fashion. If any two confirmed bachelors today were to do these same action, singing all through the house, designing high fashion clothes, and showing up at an event sharing one girl amongst the two of them, (with their kind of money they could get two or more girls for each of them) suspicions of homosexuality would be inevitable. This three way relationship between Eliza, Higgins, and Pickering forms a model of Sedgwicks triangular desire. Both men feel affection for Eliza but feel a stronger connection for one another. When celebrating their victory of passing off Eliza as a duchess, Higgins and Pickering completely forget about Eliza and celebrate amongst themselves. As Eliza becomes more of a lady each day, she becomes less of an actual person and more of a symbol of their creation, their relationship, until she completely fades out of the picture. Thus, Higgins constant displacement of his homosocial and homosexual feelings on Eliza are finally directed on Pickering, the person they were originally intended for. Homoerotic relations are present in several other movies, television series, and literature. Currently, when men wish to express emotions and love for their friends, in a strictly homosocial way, they are blocked by homophobia, fearing if these emotions are projected, they will be labeled homosexual. Breaking down current sexual beliefs and behaviors, I believe the entertainment industry is the most accepting medium for the varying degrees of male relations. I believe as more homosocial works are produced, men will find it easier to express their emotions and still maintain their masculinity and heterosexual identity. Egyptian Art and Architecture Essay -- Egypt Paintings Sculptures Buil

Egyptian Art and Architecture Egyptian Art and Architecture, the buildings, paintings, sculpture, and allied arts of ancient Egypt, from prehistoric times to its conquest by the Romans in 30 bc. Egypt had the longest unified history of any civilization in the ancient Mediterranean, extending with few interruptions from about 3000 bc to the 4th century ad. The nature of the country, fertilized and united by the Nile, and its semi-isolation from outside cultural influences, produced an artistic style that changed little during this long period. Art in all its forms was devoted principally to the service of the pharaoh, who was considered a god on Earth, to the state, and to religion. From early times a belief in a life after death dictated that the dead be buried with material goods to their ensure well-being for eternity. The regular patterns of nature—the annual flooding of the Nile, the cycle of the seasons, and the progress of the Sun that brought day and night—were considered gifts from the gods to the people of Egypt. Egyptian thought, morality, and culture were rooted in a deep respect for order and balance. Change and novelty were not considered important in themselves; thus the style and representational conventions in Egyptian art that were established early in the development of that civilization continued virtually unchanged for more than 3,000 years. To the modern eye the Egyptian artistic idiom may seem stiff and static; its underlying intention, however, was not to create an image of things as they appear in reality, but rather to capture the essence of a person, animal, or object for eternity. II PREDYNASTIC PERIOD The early prehistoric dwellers on the Nile inhabited the terraces or plateaux left by the river as it cut its bed. Tools and implements left by these early inhabitants of Egypt show their gradual development from seminomadic hunter-gatherers to settled agriculturists. By 4000 bc the civilization of Egypt was in its earliest formative stages; the Predynastic period, which lasted until about 3100 bc, had begun. Evidence of organized settlements dating from this period has been found, and artefacts produced are mainly associated with burials. Objects were put into the grave with the body for the use of the spirit in the next life; thus a great quantity of such personal goods as pottery, tools, and weapons has been preserve... ...from earlier monuments. An interest in perceptive portraiture begun in the 25th Dynasty was continued, sometimes with splendid results. The 26th Dynasty ended with the invasion by the Persian Empire and, except for brief periods, Egypt was never again completely free from foreign domination. The conquest of the country by Alexander the Great in 332 bc and by the Romans in 30 bc brought Egypt into the Classical world, but the ancient artistic traditions persisted. Alexander and his successors were depicted on the walls of temples as Egyptian kings in an Egyptian style of relief carving. Temples were built in the Ptolemaic period (the dynasty founded by Alexander) and in the Roman period that echoed traditional Egyptian styles in architecture. Egyptian art also exerted a powerful influence on the cultures of the invaders. Early Greek artists acknowledged a debt to Egypt in the development of their own styles. The Romans so loved Egyptian art that they carried off to their homeland countless examples and even had imitations of Egyptian sculpture carved by Roman artists. The influence of Egyptian art and the fascination with Egyptian antiquity have persisted to the present day.

Mans Impact N the Environment

Chante Hamilton Maturity Maturity. What makes an individual mature? Maturity comes with age and time. It is the ability to make wise decisions. It is also the way in which people act toward different situations. Maturity can be shown in the way organisms develop. Society claims that females mature faster than males, physically and emotionally. However this is not necessarily true because everyone grows differently. Although maturity has much to do with aging, it can also be seen in the way animals and plants grow. Almost anyone can identify the difference between a mango seedling and a fully developed mangola .The contrast is obvious. A mango seedling is small, hard, bitter and green. On the other hand, a mangola is large in size, bright yellow and succulent due to its maturity. This instantly brings to mind the origin of the word mature. The word is derived from the Latin term ‘maturare’ which means â€Å"to ripen†. We can also see maturity in animals. For exampl e, a toad and a tadpole are completely different in structure. However, a tadpole changes into a toad due to metamorphosis. A tadpole is limited to only a tale and a head and is incredibly. Whereas a toad particularly bulky and has webbed feed, protruding eyes and lacks a tale.Maturity is also shown in the way human beings grow as they age. In this case, some people mature faster than others. The body of an adolescent female is far less developed than an adult female. A mature female has broad hips and large busts compared to younger females who lack such assets. Body maturity also applies to males. When a male is young his entire body has a â€Å"young† look. His shoulders are not broad, his arms look a bit wimpy and he has little to no facial hair. However, a grown male has facial hair, he is taller, his arms and his chest and shoulders are built. Recently I’ve witnessed just how immature some people can get.Politicians of the PLP and FNM exposed each other’s personal life to the nation as if it were concerned anyone. They did this just to gain more votes. Anyone that can stoop this low has to be immature. To be immature is to be mentally primitive. It causes human beings to display a â€Å"childish† attitude towards others. They should have played fair and worked in their constituencies to the best of their abilities. That would have been the mature thing to do. Immaturity is also seen at its best in young children. For example, as a child I would throw the biggest of tantrums whenever I candy and â€Å"no† was the answer.I would cry, scream and throw things over until I accepted the fact that I just was not getting the candy. Now, as an adult I can hear the word â€Å"no† and move on because of the level of maturity I’ve gained over the past few years. The best way to show maturity is to show our knowledge instead of bringing childish acts to the table. Each and every one of us has the ability to do so if we would just think before we act. We should also show respect for our peers and give help where it is due. Maturity is also shown through manners, courteousness and being graceful. All of these things are what makes an individual mature. Mans Impact N the Environment Chante Hamilton Maturity Maturity. What makes an individual mature? Maturity comes with age and time. Autism and Vaccines Vaccines save lives; fear endangers them. Its a simple message parents need to keep hearing   Jeffrey Kluger, vaccines have always been wrongly accused of being threatening for human health, however vaccination opposition is as old as vaccination itself, one of the biggest accusations is that vaccines are the main cause of Autism, a complex mental and developmental disorder that is characterized by difficulties in social environments, verbal and nonverbal communication, and occasional problems with behavior, the growth of this mental condition has increased enormously the last 14 years, however, no, vaccines do not cause autism because theyre designed to be easily handled by the human immune system, autism is also a birth defect not something that manifest later in life , and a gigantic number studies have denied any type of relation between these two.. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Autism And Vaccines" essay for you Create order It has been a very clashing discussion the argument of whether vaccines have been designed to heal and aid the human body, and even when the answer seems obvious many people argue that the elements and chemicals that are used to create this medications have made vaccines more damaging than they are helpful, although this rumor has been widely spread and had poisoned the mind of many people, this theory is completely false A Babys immune system can easily handle the vaccines recommended for infant and toddlers (evidence shows vaccines) This words were written by The immunization action coalition, a nonprofit organization that is completely devoted on educating the people on the benefits and the importance of vaccines. They have investigated the human immune system and its answer to vaccines which gives them the criteria to expose the falsehood of these allegations. Some people worry that receiving too many vaccines early in life can   overwhelm a babys immune system and that this so mehow can lead to autism. This doesnt fit with what we know about the remarkable capacity of the immune system (evidence shows vaccines) since the moment a baby is born their body has to confront with dangerous microorganisms displayed like bacteria, viruses, and fungi. And inside of these organisms there are far many more antigens which are the bad type of organisms for the human body than in all of the recommended childhood vaccines combined, this is irrefutable proof that vaccines contain no potential danger for the human body. Autism is usually manifested when the child is 18-24 months old which had led many people to believe that vaccines are the cause for this behavioral change since most of them are given within this range age, however, the majority of these people are desperate parents who dont fully understand the situation and need something to blame it on, anyhow this accusations couldnt be further from the truth developmental specialist, however, can identify early signs of autism in children when they are much younger(evidence shows vaccines) there is a great deal of doctors that have dedicated their lives to the understanding of autism and they have been able to detect this disorder in children way before they start getting their shots. Researchers have used functional MRI [magnetic resonance imaging] scans to study the connection in areas of the brain that control language, social, and emotional processes, suggesting that these abnormalities contribute to the development of autism(evidence shows vaccines)   autism is a very convoluted mental condition and the results for these researches are only clues that will contribute to a further investigation on it and highlight that the cause of autism is far more complicated than just pointing at something as harmless as vaccines.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The supposed link between vaccines and autism has caught the attention of many scientist and doctors that also want to investigate, research, and finally share an opinion on the subject, while the big majority of these people support the use of vaccines there are also groups that are fully committed to defame the properties of vaccines, a great example of one of these groups is the one led by the britain Dr. Andrew Wakefield, the head of a 12 member group that had published many anti-vaccine articles and researches, however, as the Doctor John Calfee states a series of studies (summarized in Offits two books) had failed to replicate Wakefields results and in fact had ruled out any connection between autism and any vaccine, including the MMR vaccine (Calfee, John E.) and as it was expected these studies have been proven to be baseless, apart from these false accusations research has also been done in the other side of the argument, and it is much stronger evidence, there is a institution that helps provide guidance to congress in scientific issues called the institute of medicine. consensus report strongly stated that the evidence did not show a link between vaccines and autism(evidence shows vaccines) This statement was done after The Institute Of Medicine reviewed and studied about 1,200 studies on the matter, even when this number studies seems enormous there are more companies, clinics and institutions that have analyzed the issue like the RAND company that in 2011 published an article on the anti-vaccine movement denying any relationship between Autism and vaccines, or even the Federal Court that after examining 939 articles on the concern concluded as stated that the evidence was overwhelmingly contrary to the idea that autism is triggered by vaccines, and there is not bigger proof on a scientific issue that the opinion of hundreds of scholars, scientifics, and doctors combined on the same side of the argument.
